Comments: Phra Puthakwak is the Sukhothai style buddha image in abhaya mudra. The right hand is raised, bent at right angle, with palm facing outwards and fingers extended pointing upwards. The image represents protection, peace, benevolence and the dispelling of fear. This gesture since ancient times is sign of good intention - the palm raised and unarmed proposes friendship. The abhaya mudra was also used by the Buddha to subdue a rampaging elepant released by Devadatta (cousin of Buddha).
